ISLAND MAGIC – STOP EVERYTHING

Over the last 54 years, the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC) has been proudly providing Access to Motorsport for Competitors, Officials and Spectators predominantly at one of the best known circuits around the world; the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

Along with a great relationship with the owners and managers of this fabulous circuit, PIARC has always looked to promote Motor Racing in a professional and pleasurable manner.

Along the way, PIARC created a unique race meeting that to this day, remains a fantastic finale to State level Motor Racing in Victoria . Over the last 15 years the Island Magic’s popularity has grown with Competitors with excellent fields of over 230 cars that all enjoy a tight and exciting scheduled of races.

The Island Magic atmosphere is always relaxed and inviting which has led to good spectator numbers over the last five years and with that consistency it has also brought interest from corporate Australia.

NEW SPONSOR:

In 2006, PIARC is proud to announce that respected Brake and Rotor supplier RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes will be the naming rights sponsor of the 16th Island Magic to be held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on the 25th and 26th of November. With a pedigree born out of Motorsport involvement, both Rotors and Drums Australia (RDA) and EBC Brakes have now formed a dedicated Motorsport division to handle all enquiries for those directly involved, either as a competitor or at the club level.

The Motorsport division of RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes can assist with advice and guidance in many areas of a vehicle’s braking requirements by drawing on current experience and many levels of current and past Motorsport involvement.

Ongoing product development is the cornerstone of RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes product base and Motorsport has become an important part of their research and development and RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes see an excellent tie in with the Island Magic and the State level competitor.

Les Smith, Managing Director of RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes had this to say about his involvement with PIARC as naming rights sponsor of the Island Magic; “The Island Magic was put together for Club and State based competitors who wanted all the trappings of a National level event but who might not have the budget or time to race nationally”.

“When we were approached to be the naming rights sponsor of the Island Magic we saw this as a perfect opportunity to promote our exciting new EBC Motorsport division and our complete range of Disc Brake Rotors, Brake Drums and Kevlar brake pads and parts, which has made us the largest supplier in Australia and New Zealand”, Les went on to add. “The Motorsport division can assist with advice and guidance in many areas of a vehicle’s braking requirements and we intend to use the RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes Island Magic to fully promote our range of products and expertise”.

Peter Nelson, President of PIARC was also on hand to discuss the signing of RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes and was delighted with the connection; “Over the last few years PIARC has worked successfully with sponsors such as Repco and Image Racing in promoting the Island Magic meetings, and today’s signing of RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes brings together an association we hope to continue with well into the future. Les Smith from RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes has been a long time supporter of Motorsport and we are extremely proud to have him on board”.

Another well publicised bonus for the Island Magic is it’s inclusion as the final round of the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships (VSCRC) that has been running continuously since 1975. So the traditional end of year meeting will now hold extra significance, both in statue, promotion and calibre.

The Big Brake Kit - Product Launch

After many years of testing and evaluation, RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes in association with Peter Brock, are pleased to announce the release of Brake upgrade kits for a range of Vehicles found on Australian roads.

THE BIG BRAKE KIT from the BIG BRAKE COMPANY

With the evolution of RDA Rotors into brake pad development and the take over of performance based EBC brakes, the natural direction was to strive for increased brake performance across the range of brake componentry for all vehicles found on Australian roads.

With RDA-EBC’s large Motorsport involvement with the likes of:- Aussie race cars/ Commodore Cup/ The Australian Saloon cars and various targa and rally competitors, we were able to draw on a lot of harsh environment testing, that is not available on the road.

As Peter Brock had used EBC Brakes for many years, discussions regarding the lack of true brake performance and the related safety issues of increased performance that cars were delivering, in speed and cornering capabilities, little had been done about increasing the performance of a car’s braking system.

Whilst EBC could improve braking performance with the use of Kevlar and other high quality brake pad materials and RDA Rotors could enhance the braking performance of a standard brake disc, the other components that work together very closely, were fitted by manufacturers as they performed sufficiently for its intended purpose and fitted the manufacturers budget.

Working closely with Peter Brock on improved brake performance, the need to provide increased safety through better braking, had to cross all budgets and not be the exclusive domain of those with high disposable incomes.

It also had to be something that was available as a direct fitment, for new and more importantly used cars, already on our roads.

In respect of this we are launching three different levels of brake upgrade kits to suit all budgets.

  • Level 1 is a performance enhancement upgrade kit.

  • Level 2 is a performance upgrade kit.

  • Level 3 is an extreme performance upgrade kit.

All of these meet with Peter’s exacting desire and requirements to deliver better braking, not only in enhanced stopping performance, but also being more reliable and consistent during repeated braking.

Independent testing has shown that the product developed has met or exceeded the necessary Australian Design Rule (ADR) for automotive braking systems (ADR31/00). In fact the testing is the first done on a public road in Australia and where better to have this done than on Mount Panorama at Bathurst- a road well known By Peter Brock!

RDA-EBC Company Profile… Rotors & Drums Australia have joined forces with EBC Brakes Australia to offer customers an extended range of brake replacement parts. Rotors & Drums Australia commenced operations in Melbourne as a trade and retail parts supplier in 1987. Today RDA is the largest supplier of Disc Brake Rotors and Brake Drums in Australia and New Zealand, with a range of parts to suit over 1530 vehicle applications. EBC Brakes is the worlds leading brand of Kevlar brake pads and parts. EBC Brakes offer parts for race and high performance street machines and were introduced into Australia in 2000. RDA Managing Director, Les Smith said, "RDA Rotors & EBC Brakes is proud to enhance our relationship with Peter Brock. The brake upgrade kits are a further example of our brake products delivering not only value to the Australian Motoring public, but the increased safety aspects are an important focus often overlooked, when people strive to improve the performance of their car."

"The brake components used in our Brake upgrade kits, are of the highest quality and are designed to ensure long operating life, goes hand in hand with value for money."

EBC “Yellow Stuff” Brake pads test and report

The tests were carried out under racing conditions at both the Phillip Island GP circuit (4.45km) and the Oran Park long circuit (2.62km). Testing was carried out with the cooperation of current Australian Saloon Car Champion Bruce Heinrich driving his EA Falcon Saloon Car.

Bruce, as well as several other top drivers use the Hawk (black) competition brake pads – quote “they are consistent and you always know that they are going to work”.

A new pair of RDA “off the shelf” front brake rotors (non-slotted or treated) and the EBC Yellow Stuff brake pads were fitted to the car in readiness for the first of three Friday practice sessions. The weather was overcast and cool.

After the first session we checked the brakes and everything looked fine. Bruce commented that the brakes worked fine without too much warming up, and that the pedal had a good feel to it unlike the Hawk pads that have a fairly harsh pedal feel. He also reported that pad performance was on a par with the Hawk pads. We decided to leave the pads in the car for the rest of the day. In all we did twenty-one pretty quick laps in the three practice sessions.

After a nine-lap practice session on Saturday morning, it was time for qualifying. The weather was fine. It must be noted that Bruce was vying for the 2005 Saloon Car Championship with three other drivers and needed a good haul of points at this round to maintain his lead. A qualifying position at the front end of the thirty-five car field was a must, and with so much on the line, we were confident that the EBC brake pads would do the job and as such we left them in the car.

Bruce qualified the car on pole position! He also won two of the three races on the weekend, and ran second in the third!

We checked the brakes after the meeting and decided to leave them as is for the next round of the series at Oran Park. The weather at Oran Park was fine and warm. Once again the car qualified on pole position. Bruce also won all three races over the weekend and was subsequently crowned 2005 Australian Saloon Car Champion.

After two “full-on” race meetings the brakes were inspected. The rotors will be skimmed and the pads will be cleaned up, they will then be re-fitted to the car.

Bruce’s comments “The performance of the EBC pads is excellent as is the wear life, and I will definitely use them in the future”.
